DFW-Area Athlete Selected to Carry Torch at Statewide Summer Games in Arlington

Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) athlete Corey Richter (Bonham) is one of six athletes from across the state selected to serve as a torchbearer at this Friday night’sSummer Games Opening Ceremony, being held at UT-Arlington’s Maverick Stadium. The 48th annual Summer Games is SOTX’s largest competition of the year, featuring nearly 3,000 athletes from all around the state of Texas. Events get underway on Thursday, May 25 and will run through Sunday, May 28.


Richter has been chosen to carry the Flame of Hope for the North region. He will be escorted by a Guardian of the Flame, Kirk Roberts of the Bedford Police Department. The torch will be passed for five segments until it lights the cauldron, signifying the official start of the 2017 Summer Games.


Wright participates with the Bonham Warriors delegation and will compete in Track & Field at the statewide competition this weekend.


Lynn Mason (Plainview) will deliver the Flame of Hope to the stadium, Cole Wright (Brenham) will carry for the East region, Leticia Vasquez (Rosebud) for the Central region, Raymond Alvarado (Corpus Christi) for the South region and Donavan Haynes(Andrews). Escorting each one as Guardians of the Flame will be Texas Law Enforcement Torch Run officers from each athlete’s respective region.


During the four-day event, athletes will compete in Athletics (track & field), Basketball, Cycling, Gymnastics, Soccer or Tennis. Events will be held primarily on the campus of The University of Texas at Arlington, as well as various venues throughout the Arlington area. Gymnastics will take place in Rockwall. All events are free and open to the public.
