29th Annual Día De Los Muertos Program
Lawndale Art Center

October, 2016

Dear Lawndale Friends,
As we settle into the rhythm of fall Lawndale looks forward to taking a break between exhibitions to celebrate Día de los Muertos. As many of you know, Lawndale has long celebrated this holiday of honoring the dead, a tradition that originated in Mexico and is marked by festivals and lively celebrations.
Lawndale's Día de los Muertos program begins with our Retablo Exhibition & Silent Auction on Thursday, October 27th. We encourage you to dress up in the style of Calavera Catrina/Catrin and to partake in the abundance of tequila and Mexican-style bites provided by Cuchara while you bid on artwork by 150 Houston artists. Tickets are $35 for Members and $50 for Non-members, and may be purchased HERE and below. The proceeds from this event support the Día de los Muertos programming and Lawndale's 2016 - 2017 exhibition season.
This year's (free!) artistic programming for Día de los Muertos combines community favorites including the Musical and Literary Ofrenda on Tuesday, November 1st and the beloved Family Day Fiesta on Saturday, November 5th with new programmatic initiatives and collaborations. We are excited to present a series of short films organized by the Houston Latino Film Festival, site-specific installations by artist Grace Zuniga, and ongoing lectures and community engagement activities designed to illuminate audiences with the rich and storied history of Día de los Muertos. In addition, we are pleased to collaborate with the Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) in creating educational, hands-on art workshops for Houston-area schools. Lastly, we are excited to collaborate with both MECA and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on our Family Day Fiesta, and are pleased to announce that on Saturday, November 5th participating families are invited to the MFAH from 3 - 5 PM free of charge to participate in a Día de los Muertos-inspired scavenger hunt through the museum's collection.
To help us present these myriad free artistic programs to the community, we invite you not only to join us for the Retablo Exhibition & Silent Auction on the 27th but to support our Día de los Muertos program. To find an overview of supporting levels and benefits simply click HERE.
We look forward to welcoming you to Lawndale during this special time!
Best wishes,
Lawndale Art Center
