GenCure Marrow Donor Program to recruit donors at Rock n Roll Marathon Expo
GenCure and BioBridge Global

December, 2015

Teams from the GenCure Marrow Donor Program will be at one of the healthiest places in town this Friday and Saturday – the San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Health & Fitness Expo – seeking lifesaving donors.

Working with students from the Feik School of Pharmacy at the University of the Incarnate Word, the GenCure team is looking to sign up 200 donors for the national Be The Match registry during the two-day event.

The expo will be at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Hall A, in downtown San Antonio, from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The San Antonio Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, as well as a half-marathon, a 5K and a half-marathon relay, will be Sunday. The Humana Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio 10K is Saturday.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of marathon weekend,” said Jon Hudson, community engagement lead for the GenCure Marrow Donor Program. “With the runners in the weekend’s events, as well as their friends and family, we’re excited at the potential for adding motivated donors to the registry.”

The GenCure Donor Marrow Program, which is part of San Antonio-based BioBridge Global, signs up potential stem cell and bone marrow donors for a national registry, one that matches donors with patients undergoing treatment for leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and other disorders.

Registration is simply a matter of filling out a form and providing a cheek swab, and it typically takes less than 10 minutes.

Every year, more than 14,000 patients in this country need a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. Unfortunately, 70 percent of those who need a transplant do not have a matching donor in the family.

To join the registry, a donor needs to:

  • Meet some health guidelines and be between the ages of 18 and 44
  • Be willing to donate to any patient in need, until age 61
  • Agree to keep his or her contact information current

The need is especially urgent for people of ethnically diverse backgrounds, since patients are more likely to match someone of their own racial and/or ethnic background.
