St. Pius X High School Best Buddies Chapter Earns Two Awards
St. Pius X High School

November, 2015

St. Pius X High School Best Buddies received an Outstanding Chapter Award, and founder and last year's president Jenny Sheeren '15 was named the 2015 Community Champion of the Year, club sponsor Trudie Dattilo announced today.

One of the largest student clubs at St. Pius X in its first year, Best Buddies also earned the Rookie of the Year Award for its impressive initiative and involvement earlier this year.

Best Buddies Texas recognized the SPX Best Buddies Chapter for each award.

The Outstanding Chapter Award acknowledged SPX's incredible contributions to further the Best Buddies movement at the School and in the community for the 2014-15 academic year. The student club was thanked for its service and commitment to sharing opportunities for friendship, leadership and inclusion, and for making the world a brighter place for so many.

Junior Sarah McMillian accepted the Outstanding Chapter Award from Best Buddies International Founder and Chairman Anthony K. Shriver over the summer at the 2015 Best Buddies Leadership Conference at Indiana University Bloomington. There are only two Outstanding Chapter awards presented yearly in each state.

As the 2015 Community Champion of the Year, Sheeren was honored as an advocate who, through her volunteerism and philanthropy in the community, provided a notable effort towards the inclusion of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Sheeren was the Class of 2015 salutatorian, and her passion for working with individuals with IDD carried over to her college career at Vanderbilt University where she majors in special education.

The 2014-15 officers for SPX Best Buddies included Ashley Solorio as vice president, Haley Shoebotham as assistant volunteer coordinator, and Mrs. Dattilo as the club sponsor.

Best Buddies® is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
