NEWS FROM TEXAS STATE: Center for P-16 Initiatives launches summercollege readiness programs
Texas State University

June, 2015

The Center for P-16 Initiatives has launched summer programming designed to prepare secondary students in Central Texas for college and career readiness.

College Access Project (CAP) Camp is an access-intensive program for incoming high school juniors and seniors, to be held on the Texas State campus June 9-19. Participants will model the daily routines of successful college students. Attendees will engage in workshops and activities that cover critical information such as financial aid, SAT/ACT test preparation, college writing, critical thinking skills and campus life.

The Sowing Education and Empowerment in Daily Speech (SEEDS) program--a creative and academic writing service to incarcerated youth at the Hays County Juvenile Center (HCJC)--will run June 10-Aug. 10. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the SEEDS Program has been implemented as part of the summer education programming at HCJC. The outreach is a linguistic-based curriculum that aims to train incarcerated students ages 12-17 to be critical thinkers, intentional speakers and creative writers of high quality. At the end of each summer the students’ writings are published in the latest edition of SEEDS: The Collected Writings.

Camp Jumpstart is a day camp for incoming 6–8th graders, to be held June 22-23 at Texas State. Students will engage in team-building and empowerment activities, and also be informed on the best practices of successful students.

For more information contact the Center for P-16 Initiatives at (512) 245-8192.
