SpiritHorse Therapeutic Center Sidewalkers Needed
Spirithorse Therapeutic Center

March, 2015

Dear Friends of SpiritHorse,

You are receiving this email because at some point in the past you have expressed an interest in or have come out and done some volunteer work at SpiritHorse Therapeutic Riding Center. And we need your help!

Our Spring session for our clients with disabilities is set to begin March 16.  When our clients come out they come for one hour, once a week for twelve weeks.  During that time we try to keep them together with the same instructor/sidewalker crew for the duration of their session.  And we need sidewalkers!

Our sidewalkers are just what the name indicates.  They walk alongside the pony and the client-rider during the session.  Our sidewalkers serve a dual purpose.  They are part of the safety net in that they are there to help the client keep steady should they lose their balance.  Sidewalkers help that rider stay on top of the horse and not fall off.  They are also an important part of the therapeutic process.  They are tasked with helping the client keep proper form while riding.  This strengthens and improves balance which, in turn, helps with the rehabilitation that we are all trying to achieve.  Our program could not claim all of the successes without the help of volunteer sidewalkers.

If you think you would be interested in sidewalking for us this Spring please respond to  Again, we will ask that you commit to twelve weeks.  Now, you can choose to only sidewalk with one client (one hour per week) or you can opt to sidewalk for several clients (several hours per week).  Your choice.  Just let us know what days of the week and times of the day are best for you.  We'll then plug your name onto the schedule and let you know!

Also, if you feel we need to know about any physical limitations you may have then include that as well.  Because, let's face it.  If I'm 5'2" I don't want to sidewalk with our Clydesdale and bump my nose into her knee cap! Nor do I want to sidewalk with one of the pocket-ponies if I was built to slam baskets for the NBA.

So if you are interested let us know.  One of us will get back to you with your assigned times.  Also, we can send you a copy of our Volunteer Manual which explains more about our program, more about sidewalking duties.  And as always, let us know if you have any questions.

If you would like to be on a STAND-BY list only, be available for last-minute fill-ins in case a regular cannot make it in, let us know that as well.

Responses need to go to

Thanks so much!!
