Respite Care, Catholic Charities, Any Baby Can, Silver & Black Give Back

August, 2013

Silver & Black Give Back announced today the Summer Team Up Challenge Champions. Youth-led groups from Any Baby Can, Catholic Charities and Respite Care were selected from 10 semifinalists and awarded with $10,000 each to continue their work in the community.

Any Baby Can “Fit Kids and Sibs”

The Any Baby Can summer project “Fit Kids and Sibs!” provided free fitness community classes that focused on teaching siblings of individuals with a developmental disability how to incorporate their brothers and sisters into fitness and games. The group plans to use the $10,000 to continue the “Fit Kids and Sibs” program throughout the year.

Catholic Charities “School Impact Program”

The refugee students in the School Impact Program learned about the importance of recycling and waste management. The students created a video to share with the community about recycling and gave out bins for each household to continue to recycle. They are working to educate the refugee population of San Antonio about going green. With the $10,000 Catholic Charities will continue their work and create by creating recycling pamphlets in their native languages to distribute throughout their community.

Respite Care: “Respite Kids Get Fit”

Respite Care hosted “Take Home Tuesdays” and “Fitness Fridays” where children at the daycare documented their nutrition and fitness and participated in hands-on learning activities and field trips that focused on healthy living. They will use the $10,000 to continue their program and to provide special needs children with exercise bikes and equipment to accommodate their needs.

The Team Up Challenge is a youth-led service-learning initiative that encourages students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world, bringing education alive in powerful ways.  Students create projects that address needs that will help improve their community in one of five categories: Arts & Culture, Education, Environment, Health & Wellness or Uniformed Services.

During the summer, youth-serving nonprofits apply for the program and 10 are selected as Team Up Challenge semifinalists. Each received $1,000 to work on their projects throughout the summer and the three champions are awarded $10,000 to continue to implement positive change in our community.
