June, 2013

Two San Antonio non-profits that work on behalf of children, ChildSafe and Clarity Child Guidance Center, have partnered to organize this year’s Children’s Summit, a two-day conference featuring top industry professionals to share best practices, recent case studies and new research related to children’s mental health issues and child abuse.  The conference includes 30 intermediate and advanced seminars and two notable luncheon speakers June 24 – 25 at El Tropicano Hotel Riverwalk, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. both days; cost is $300 and includes the keynote luncheon programs.  Group and student rates are available.

June 24will focus on child mental health issues, and experts will examine different aspects of diagnosis and treatment options for children, discuss family dynamics, Autism, and the spectrum of behavioral healthcare for children and teens.

June 25 will focus on child abuse issues, including trauma-informed care, interdisciplinary approaches, and developmentally appropriate practices regarding child abuse detection, investigation, treatment and prevention.

The luncheon programs are open to the general public and individuals and groups are welcome to attend one or both days; cost for each individual luncheon program is $55 per person or $500 for a table of 10.

Keynote luncheon speaker on June 24 is Pete Earley, a storyteller who has penned 13 books including the New York Times Bestseller The Hot House and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize finalist Crazy: A Father’s Search through America’s Mental Health Madness. When Mr. Earley’s life was turned upside down by the events recounted in his book Crazy, he joined the National Alliance of Mental Illness to advocate for strong mental health reform on the public stage.

Keynote luncheon speaker on June 25is William Paul Young, author of The Shack and Crossroads. The breakaway hit and self-published book, The Shack, remained #1 on the NY Times Bestsellers List for 49 consecutive weeks. With over 20 million copies in print, Mr. Young will share his own thoughts on forgiveness after being abused as a child.

“This year’s event offers a depth of intelligence on issues facing children and their families that is relevant for all persons who interact and work on behalf of children,” said Kim Abernethy, CEO of ChildSafe.

“We are proud to bring two nationally celebrated authors to San Antonio with partner Clarity Child Guidance Center who will share their insights and personal journeys, both related to children and healing” said Abernethy.

“With the incidence and prevalence of children’s mental health and abuse growing across our nation, this conference will provide timely and beneficial information for professionals, said Fred Hines, president and CEO of Clarity Child Guidance Center.  Further, anyone who is focused on providing happy and healthy childhoods would benefit from hearing and learning from our nationally acclaimed schedule of speakers.”

Children’s Summit attracts professionals from around the state and is designed to equip child protective workers, physicians, therapists, counselors, mental health professionals, attorneys, educators and law enforcement with the most current and advanced information related to children’s mental health issues and child abuse, two critical  issues facing America’s youth, including those in San Antonio.
