24 Days to Go & We Need You!
Texans Care for Children

May, 2013

There's Still Time—and Needfor Your Voice!
Things are abuzz at the Texas Capitol, and the possibility of progress for kids and families is close at hand. Thank you for getting us this far! Your calls and emails on behalf of kids are helping move good ideas closer to the finish line, so foster kids can have more supports, so more school children can have healthy breakfasts and mental health services they need, and so preschoolers can get a good start on learning.
So much is possible, but will lawmakers finish the job? One of the bigger flashpoints this session has been what to do for 1.5 million Texans who won't have health care coverage next year unless this legislature acts.
If you've contacted elected officials before about this, thank you, and we ask you to keep it up! And if you've been waiting to speak out, please know the time for action is here. Make a toll-free call in support of health care for more than 1 million uninsured Texans. Our friends at Consumers Union have set up this number (866) 823-4787 and calls are needed today. Press "2" to speak to a representative in the House. When asked, provide the district number for one of the key folks below. These offices need to hear you say: "Please send HB 3791, the health care solution bill, to the House floor for a vote!"
  • Myra Crownover – Denton, district 64
  • Sarah Davis – Houston, district 134
  • Todd Hunter – Corpus Christi, district 32
  • Dan Branch – Dallas, district 108
  • Angie Chen Button – Garland/Dallas, district 112
  • Byron Cook Corsicana, district 8
  • John Frullo Lubbock, district 84
  • Charlie Geren – Fort Worth, district 99
  • John Keumpel Seguin, district 44
  • Doug Miller – New Braunfels, district 7

 May is Mental Health Month
And a great time to join our Children's Mental Health Forum! Our next meeting will be May 21, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health in Austin (map).

Our policy associate Ashley Harris shared ideas this month on our blog about what Texas can do for 30,000 Texas kids in foster care.
Young Activists Set Inspiring Example
What do you say to a kindergartener who tells lawmakers the budget needs to consider kids like him? Or to former foster youth who speak from experience about what it's like to be in the state's official care? When lawmakers hear these young voices—as we at Texans Care for Children work to make sure they dotwo important things happen. It empowers children and moves elected leaders to act.
We captured the video of a 5-year-old boy testifying this year to share his story about autism and early childhood intervention and chronicled some other examples of kids speaking out, including photos of young activists and a blog post on their efforts. Best of all, our staff member Ashley, a former Child Protective services caseworker, has brought youth to the Capitol to share their experiences. What a fitting tribute to April's Child Abuse Awareness Month and May's National Foster Care Month, as lawmakers hear firsthand from kids and advance child protection priority bills so more youth like them can succeed.
