In September 2012, East Austin Children’s Promise, a wraparound initiative of Southwest Key Programs, began offering a program of free Spanish-language General Education Development (or GED) classes for residents of Travis County.

More than 40 students, ages 20-40 have taken Spanish GED class so far and recently the program had its first recipient of the GED, Maria Esther Palacios.

Palacios spent the early part of her life in San Luis, Mexico where she attended school through 9th grade. In 1993 she moved to the United States. Working for Borden Dairy as a temporary employee, Palacios was frustrated to learn that although her employer was happy with her work, she was not eligible for a full-time permanent position without her GED certification. A resident of East Austin, Sheldon Williams grew up just down the street from Southwest Key Programs headquarters on Jain Lane. Williams wanted to be “the best basketball player in the world” as a kid and since he was skinny, began working out at an early age. He notes, “Working out didn’t hurt with the girls either.”

Health Promise | Promesa de Salud, an initiative of East Austin Children’s Promise offering physical fitness and nutritional programs for the whole community, began in 2012 and as a certified Master Trainer Williams was a perfect fit for the program. In addition to helping kids and adults work out, he serves as the Food Referee for East Austin College Prep lunches. Williams monitors the lunch room, pointing out “No, Whoa, and Go” foods for kids. “No” foods being those in high in saturated fat, salt, or refined sugar. When an offending food is discovered, Williams throws a “food flag” to let the student know. (read more)

EAPrep's Globaloria Students
Continue To Win Awards

Louis Benitez' and Monica Balleza's game "The Endangered Wolf"

The awards continue to roll in for East Austin College Prep‘s Globaloria Game Design Program. Every student at EAPrep in grades 6-9 attends the class where they learn to code and create an educational game. The program at EAPrep is teaching students not only the basics of coding, but also to be leaders among their peers.

Most recently, student body president Laura Plascencio was one of only 24 women nationally to receive a grant from the Aspire IT Middle School Outreach Program Pilot Fund to lead a computing Summer camp for young women. Plascencio was the runner-up for the Central Texas NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.

In addition to the grant received by Plascencio, three other students have received awards for their Globaloria games this year. (read more)
