Fulbright scholar Avono of the University of Lomé to visit Texas State

Texas State University will welcome Komla Avono of the University of Lomé, the largest university located in the African country of Togo, March 25-27 to speak in several English classes and meet with various student groups.

Avono is a faculty member at the University of Lomé and is currently serving as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Nebraska. His dissertation entitled “Otherness and Criticism in African American Literature from 1865 to 1964: A Metacritical Approach” was completed in July 2010, preceded by a master’s thesis on “Oppression and Self-Development in Richard Wright’s Native Son.”


During Avono’s three-day visit, he will discuss literature and race in three English classes and meet members of the English honor society Sigma Tau Delta and students from the Honors College.


The visit is being funded through the Department of English, the Provost’s Office and the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars’ Occasional Lecturer Fund.
