The San Antonio Symphony’s third Classics Series performance of its 73rd season will take place on November 9 & 10, 2012 at 8 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre. Music Director Sebastian Lang-Lessing will lead the orchestra in works by French and Spanish composers that invoke the sounds and spirit of Spain.

Ravel described his dramatic concept for Bolero as, “. . . consisting wholly of orchestral tissue without music — of one very long, very gradual crescendo. The themes are impersonal — folk tunes of the usual Spanish-Arabian kind.” It became his most celebrated and often performed work. The program begins with Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole, which was his first major work for orchestra. The form of the work is based on Baroque suites. Ravel had not yet visited Spain when he wrote Rapsodie espagnole, but he captured its moods and colors brilliantly.

The second work on the first half of the program is the piano concerto by Manuel da Falla called Nights in the Gardens of Spain. The soloist is Croatian native Martina Filjak. She studied at the ZagrebMusicAcademy and subsequently from the Vienna Conservatory and the soloist’s class at Hannover’s Hochschule für Musik. In 2009, Martina Filjak won first prize in the Cleveland International Piano Competition, following which she made concerto debuts at the Konzerthaus Berlin and Vienna’s Musikverein and her recital debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall/Zankel Hall (“Brilliant, sensitive and imaginative playing with resourcefulness of technique and naturalness of musicality. …A striking individuality …A pianist to watch” The New York Times). Prior to winning the Cleveland competition, she had been first prizewinner of the 2007 Viotti International Piano Competition in Italy and the 2008 Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Barcelona.

The women of the San Antonio Mastersingers will be featured on Debussy’s Nocturnes. This impressionist work features a dream-like atmosphere, loose flowing rhythms, diffuse textures, and mysterious tone colors. The three movements each examine three distinct facets of the night
