Witte Museum Presents Threads of South America: 2,000 Years of Textiles
Witte Museum

October, 2012

Get wrapped up in Threads of South America: 2,000 Years of Textiles, on display October 13, 2012 through March 31, 2013 at the Witte Museum in the Betty Coates Textile Gallery. This exhibition provides an in-depth look into a variety of vibrant textiles from South America, dating back to 500 BCE and spanning 2,000 years of history. The Textile collection is one of the Witte’s largest.

Threads of South America complements Mummies of the World: The Exhibition, also on display at the Witte, which features an array of mummies cloaked in textiles from the same region. Learn how the same arid environment that naturally preserved the mummies from Peru aided in the preservation of the earliest textiles in the Witte Museum collection.

Explore this rich, time-honored tradition through elaborate tapestries, costumes, fragments of early fishing nets and much more. Carefully selected three dimensional artifacts augment the historical textiles by providing cultural context. People living on both sides of the Andes Mountain range created textiles using cotton and other plants, feathers, and the hair of llamas, vicunas and alpacas. Many of the textiles’ geometric designs and imagery of humans and animals were echoed in the making of pottery and jewelry. Also on view are ceramic vessels depicting the ancient textiles that have been found in archeological digs around the area. Don’t miss this dazzling display of textiles, a collection that weaves a rich ‘tapestry’ of South American traditions!

Threads of South America: 2,000 Years of Textiles is included with museum general admission. For more information call 210.357.1910 or visit
