San Antonio Symphony

The San Antonio Symphony presents San Antonio teenage violin sensation Nancy Zhou as soloist for the second time on the Classics series in two virtuosic solo works on March 23 and 24 at the Majestic Theatre. One of the works, the Chaconne by Corigliano was written for the movie The Red Violin. Ken-David Masur, the former Resident conductor of the San Antonio Symphony will conduct and The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, directed by Marguerite McCormick will also be featured. The program includes works by Respighi, Corigliano, Ravel and Liszt.



Nancy Zhou was born in 1993 and attended the Keystone School of San Antonio, Texas. Influenced in music by her father and teacher, Long Zhou, Nancy has been studying the violin since age 4. She gave her first recital when she was 5. From then on, Nancyhas attended master classes with Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg (2005), Peter Oundjian (2001), Pinchas Zukerman (2006), Glenn Dicterow (2009), and Koichiro Harada of Japan’s Toho School of Music (2007), and performed for Kurt Masur (2009).





In the winter of 2010, Nancy was a laureate of the 10th International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition and won the special prize for the best performance of Kaija Saariaho’s Tocar for violin and piano. She was an active member of the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, and won the YOSA Concerto Competition (2004), performing with the Philharmonic Orchestra as a soloist. Nancy has participated in the Tuesday Musical Club Competition (2003), ranking in the

Bach Circle
, the highest level. Nancy has also attended string camps, and has performed at a number of local concerts, such as the “Child Prodigy” series (2003-2005). Besides competing internationally and nationally, Nancy has appeared on the national radio show, “From the Top” (2005), and has been constantly active outside of school. She was enrolled in the Aspen Music Festival and School (June–July 2008), studying with Paul Kantor, and theNewSchool’s New York String Seminar, directed by Jaime Laredo (December 2008).





As a recipient of German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter’s Circle of Friends Foundation since 2008, Nancy collaborated with Ms. Mutter on tours in areas around Europe in March 2011, with future dates in Southeast Asia in 2013, and the U.S. in 2014. After a successful performance of the Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 2 inLeipzig, Germany at the Mendelssohn-Haus with the recipients of the Circle of Friend Foundation in 2009, she returned to Europe in 2011 and played the Mendelssohn Octet with Ms. Mutter and other foundation recipients and performed at the Verbier Festival inSwitzerland. Additionally, Ms. Mutter has generously sponsoredNancy in her musical progress by a monthly scholarship. Other highlights of her concert schedule included solo recitals at theSouthwesternUniversity (November 2009), in Washington, D.C.(October 2009), in Baden-Baden, Germany (July 2010), at the Verbier Festival (July 2011), at the Festpiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (August 2011), and at the CokerMethodistChurch(March 2010 and January 2012).





Aside from music, Nancy was also presented with the Princeton Book Prize (April 2010), a prize awarded to the top 0.6% San Antonio high school juniors outstanding in academics and extracurricular endeavors and chosen by alumni from Princeton University. This past fall, Nancy began studies at HarvardUniversityand at the New England Conservatory with Miriam Fried.





Before being appointed Resident Conductor of the San Antonio Symphony in 2007, Ken-David Masur was Assistant conductor of the Orchestre National de France in Paris from 2004–2006. Beginning this season, he serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Munich Symphony as well as Assistant Conductor of the San Diego Symphony. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra in 2010 as one of three Finalists in the prestigious Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London and conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra as a conducting fellow of the Tanglewood Music Festival in the summer of 2011. Ken-David Masur serves as Artistic Director of the Chelsea Music Festival (, an annual summer music festival in New York City, which features the world’s leading musicians and exciting newcomers on the classical and jazz music stage.





The program will include two works for violin by Corigliano and Ravel. The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio sings on the Dante Symphony. The full program is:
