Christian Senior Services Announces New Program
Christian Senior Services

February, 2012

Christian Senior Services today announced the addition of a new program called Elder Friends, where adult volunteers provide friendship to homebound seniors in the community.    The Elder Friends program will provide volunteer based companionship and support to homebound and disabled senior adults, who are currently living independently in their homes.   The Elder Friends program was made possible by a generous donation from the Baptist Health Foundation.

"Older adults who are not able to leave their home can start to feel isolated and depressed, which may worsen a health condition,” explains CSS Executive Director, Sharon Baughman.  “We believe that Elder Friends will help combat loneliness among our seniors, so they may continue living independently and with dignity.   We are extremely grateful to the Baptist Health Foundation, as this solution would not be possible without their generous support.”

"We are proud to partner with Christian Senior Services to help meet the needs of homebound elderly,” adds Cody Knowlton, President and CEO of Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio.  “We know that in isolation, the elderly are vulnerable to physical and emotional health problems. We are also grateful that the good Lord has made these resources available to help meet the needs of His people.”

Volunteers, who would like to participate, must be over the age of 21 and willing to commit to a minimum of 3 hours per week with a 6-month commitment.  A background check and mandatory training is expected to ensure the confidentiality and safety of all our seniors.  The first training session for volunteers will be February 17, 2012.  To learn more or to register, please contact Patricia Guajardo, Program Manager at (210) 599 – 7405, ext 311.
