University wins athletics awards
Around Texas

July, 2009

The Texas A&M athletic media relations office was honored with 15 publication awards at the annual College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) convention in San Antonio on Wednesday afternoon.

The total number of awards ranks as the second most in school history, behind only the 20 handed to the Aggie media relations group in 2002-03. A&M set a school record for the most awards won at the national level this year, with 11 of the 15 accolades ranking among the top 10 in the country.

“This has been an outstanding year for the Texas A&M athletic department and ‘Building Champions’ is an attitude in everything we do at Texas A&M,” associate athletic director for media relations Alan Cannon said. “I am very proud of our media relations staff and to be recognized by our peers is great. I have the best staff in the country, a group that works together very well as a team.”

A&M’s media relations department produced five ‘Best in the Nation’ awards, equaling a school record set in 2007.

The A&M equestrian guide, produced by Chris Harrell and Cyndi Mousner, earned three awards, including two at the national level. The equestrian publication was named ‘Best in the Nation’ for the eighth consecutive year while also taking third in the Single Sport Guides category (consisting of 11 different sports including bowling, fencing, field hockey, women’s ice hockey, rifle, women’s rowing, sprint football, men’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s water polo). The A&M equestrian guide was also named the top single sport book in District 6 (made up of all schools in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas).

The women’s basketball, women’s golf, soccer and women’s swimming & diving books all brought home ‘Best in the Nation’ honors as well.

The A&M women’s basketball guide, produced by Marlene Navor, Jon Carpenter and Cyndi Mousner, and the A&M men’s basketball guide, produced by Colin Killian, Jon Carpenter and Cyndi Mousner, finished first and second in the nation, respectively, in the Special Event Programs category. An A&M basketball book has won the Special Event contest each of the past four years.

The A&M women’s golf book, produced by Colin Killian and Cyndi Mousner, won ‘Best in the Nation’ for the first time ever. Killian and Mousner teamed up to produce the No. 2 men’s golf book a season ago.

The Aggie women’s soccer book, produced by Casey Walling, Deanna Werner and Cyndi Mousner, earned ‘Best in the Nation’ honors for the second time in three years. The soccer book also earned an award for being the top soccer book in the district.

The A&M women’s swimming & diving guide, produced by Chris Harrell, Tia Buchanan and Cyndi Mousner, was named ‘Best in the Nation’ for the third time in five years. The book, which has finished first or second nationally in five of the last six years, was also named the top swimming & diving book in the country by Swimming World Magazine in April.

The Aggie softball guide, produced by Deanna Werner and Cyndi Mousner, ranked third in the country. The award equaled the best finish by the book since taking that same spot in 2001.

The women’s tennis guide, produced by Debbie Darrah, Jeannie Kotch and Cyndi Mousner, finished fifth in the nation, its second top five finish in three years.

The baseball guide, produced by Matt Simon, placed sixth in the nation, marking the second straight year the book has earned awards at the national level. The baseball book also earned a second place finish in the district race.

A&M’s women’s volleyball guide, produced by Debbie Darrah, Matt Simon and Cyndi Mousner, placed 10th in the nation and third in the district. The volleyball book has won national awards six times in the past nine years.

Not only was A&M well represented by earning 15 publication awards, but two members of the Aggie athletic media relations staff served as national contest coordinators for CoSIDA while three others served as judges for contests as well. Chris Harrell was the national coordinator for all three lacrosse contests while Deanna Werner served in the same role for a pair of baseball contests. Both Harrell and Werner are members of the CoSIDA Publications Committee. Associate media relations director Brad Marquardt and publications coordinator Cyndi Mousner, as well as Harrell, served as judges for the three lacrosse contests while Mousner, and student assistant Brian DeSpain served as judges for the two baseball contests.

Members of the award-winning media relations staff this past year include graphic design and layout specialist Cyndi Mousner, publications coordinator Celeste Phillips, graphic designer Jon Carpenter and photographer Glen Johnson as well as associate athletic director for media relations Alan Cannon, associate media relations directors Colin Killian and Brad Marquardt, and assistant media relations directors Debbie Darrah, Chris Harrell, Marlene Navor, Shawn Price, Matt Simon and Deanna Werner.

Senior office assistant Jackie Thornton provided valuable assistance in the production of this year’s publications as did each of this past year’s student staff: Tia Buchanan, Kacey Conley, Meredith Collier, Brian DeSpain, Sarah Grimmer, Grant Keller, Jeannie Kotch Goss, Meagan Laue, Kristen Merrifield, Aaron Walling and Casey Walling.
